The Ferrari and Alonso Relationship in F1
Ferrari clearly has the best car this year in Formula One, but lacks a steady hand in both drivers and mechanics. Fernando Alonso has shown his usual stellar ability, but with a lesser car. Could the two be good for each other? Yes.
There are many strong points to F1 racing, but there are also many shortcomings. Critics are correct in asserting drivers are to passive and races can be boring with only a few passes even attempted much less made.
What would spice up Formula One? A good rivalry. One already exists between Ferrari and McLaren. The dust up over the spying last year only caused the animosity to fester even more. Still, angry manufacturers do not make for an emotional rivalry.
Drivers are the face of F1. A bitter rivalry between two or more would make for great entertainment and tremendously aggressive racing. Hamilton and Alonso are certainly the two drivers primed for the battle royale.
For much of this season, the rivalry has short circuited do to the poor performance of the Renault. That has changed recently and what has happened? Alonso and Hamilton have fired up the rivalry. Hopefully, they will meet on the track in the last few races as well.
This season has seen a switch for the manufacturers. The Ferrari is the superior car, but driver and team errors have been common. McLaren is a bit slower, but Hamilton has been a superior driver, particularly in the rain.
Turning to the 2009 season, imagine Alonso at Ferrari. One tends to think the pit and strategy problems would become a thing of the past. As a great driver in the rain, he would also solve much of that short coming in the car.
If Alonso is in, that means one Ferrari driver would be out. Sorry, Kimi. You were great in 2007, but are an embarrassment this year. Give it up. Go sit on your boat and drink some cocktails. Despite a contract renewal, Ferrari may agree by season end.
When it comes to Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, you simply cannot sit on the fence. You love one of them and think the other is a no good punk. Whatever your choice, a rivalry built around these two drivers would be epic.
The first race of the season comes up. On the front row we find our two combatants. Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren. Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari. Tell me you would not pay a pretty penny to see turn one of that race!
The move of Fernando Alonso to Ferrari seems like a natural one. We can all see it coming. With Hamilton and Massa staggering around like drunk drivers, we should all hope it happens in 2009. Then F1 would be something to watch indeed.
